Gifts and Gains: Toward a Disability-Sensitive Reading of Ecclesiastes
Readers of the book of Ecclesiastes divide around the issues of whether the book is orthodox or not and whether it offers a constructive or despairing message. A promising approach to an orthodox and constructive reading of the book is to appreciate that it views life in God’s creation as the experience of gift and not gain. This proposal has great relevance to an appreciation of biblical teaching about disability as well as the lived experience of disability. The paper will survey Ecclesiastes as a source of wise teaching that promotes the embrace of the experience of disability.
